Post Class Reflection: Toulmin’s Model Synopsis (Week 2)

Today, I wanted to share a Post Class Reflection of my ENGT(Communication Skills English) class that I had recently attended through online meeting with my teacher along with my friends. Post Class Reflection is a writing that explains what difference a recently attended lecture or meeting has made to our understanding of a particular topic. Today we discussed about the Toulmin’s Model that is used for argumentative essays, which mainly focuses on proving a point by exploring its every aspects and drawing a conclusion. The presentation delivered by my friends and the teacher’s explanation made it pretty clear.

We all know that the Toulmin’s model has 6 parts namely, Claim, Grounds, Warrant, Backing Qualifier and Rebuttal. A point is manifested using these 6 parts in an elegant method. Firstly a Claim is made, which is basically the principle point or idea that one is trying to prove. Next is Grounds that is the collection of evidences as well as related data that he/she uses to support the claim. Warrant is the interrelation between the Claim and the Grounds, which means that it serves as the bridge to connect claim and grounds. If the warrant is not sufficiently persuasive then the further justification can be done by Backing, which connects the dots between the actual argument and the proof presented. The strength of certainty of the claim is to be asserted as a part of Toulmin’s Model known as Qualifiers, which explains the probability of the claim. And finally the Rebuttal mentions certain limitations for the initial claim i.e. exceptions when the claim can be acknowledged as false. So on the basis of today’s interactive class and comprehensive learning I want to give an example of the Toulmin’s Model.

Example:

Claim: Engineering is difficult to study.

Grounds: It comprises of many subjects and courses that need to be studied within 4 years.

Warrant: The Engineering students need to deal with Projects, Practical, Presentation, Viva, Assignment, Practical Exam, Objective Exam, Subjective Exam and Internship within that time.

Backing: So many difficult and vast subjects, numerous exams and 6 days a week classes for 8 Semesters i.e. 4 years can be really difficult.

Qualifier: Probably, Engineering is one of the toughest courses to study in the World.

Rebuttal: Unless a student is absolutely gifted or extremely careless.
